The distinction between the divine essence and energies is one of the foundational doctrines of Eastern Orthodox theology and plays a key role in understanding the relationship between God and the world. This distinction, whose roots can be traced to Greek philosophy, particularly the thought of Aristotle and the Neoplatonists, was initially introduced into Christian theology by the Cappadocian Fathers and, in later centuries, through the views of Gregory Palamas, became one of the central tenets of Orthodox theology. According to this doctrine, the divine essence is beyond the reach of creatures, while God is present in the world through His uncreated energies and enables human beings to participate in these energies. This article examines the development of this concept from Aristotelian philosophy to Eastern Orthodox theology, analyzes its implications in the areas of grace, soteriology, and mysticism, and demonstrates its difference from Western theology. In this regard, the influence of this doctrine on the understanding of divine presence, ecclesiastical structure, and religious experience in Eastern Christianity is also examined. The findings indicate that the concept of energy, in its transition from Greek philosophy to Orthodox theology, evolved from the meaning of actuality and activity into a basis for explaining God's presence and human participation, thereby linking apophatic knowledge, uncreated grace, and deification within a single structure.
