Abstract
Every theology develops and evolves in its own era. Sallie McFague’s metaphorical theology is crafted for our time and makes no claims regarding its antiquity. However, it is essential and important to reveal its connections with tradition. Any new theology must consciously interpret tradition and scripture as they are transmitted through experience. The question that arises is: how does metaphorical theology understand the Christian teachings regarding the authority of scripture, tradition, and experience? According to this theology, the tripartite division of scripture, tradition, and experience may be a constructed and misleading categorization. With the new historical criticism, we become aware of the relativity of words and images in sacred texts, understanding that these texts were written by specific individuals who expressed their experiences of the divine reality through the methods, rituals, and customs of their historical periods. Therefore, the themes that emerge from both worship and the interpretive conditions surrounding religious language are subject to "idolatry and incommensurability," whether we regard our language about God as accurate or inaccurate. This paper critiques and examines the language of the Bible about God within the perspective of Sallie McFague's metaphorical theology.
