Religious education has always been one of the core pillars of the Catholic Church, rooted in the historic command of Jesus Christ: “Go and teach” (Matthew 28:18–20). From the very beginning of Christianity, religious education has been considered an essential mission of the Church, and over the centuries, it has taken on various forms and content.
This study adopts a historical-critical approach to examine the evolution of religious education within the Catholic Church. The main objective is to uncover its dual nature: on the one hand, as a means of transmitting doctrine and preserving the Church’s religious identity; and on the other, as a tool for redefining its relationship with broader society.
Through a brief historical overview and a focused analysis of the key document Gravissimum Educationis (Declaration on Christian Education), this article explores how the Church has continuously attempted to maintain a balance between these two aims. Furthermore, it investigates the challenges the Catholic Church faces in the contemporary world regarding religious education.
