In the modern period, the content of the Gospels was questioned. New archaeological and scientific discoveries cast doubt on all the claims and stories of the Gospels. Rudolf Bultmann, who was not only concerned with modern man and his encounter with the Scripture, but also a New Testament expert, made the point that the only thing that can be relied on about the historical authenticity of the Gospels is that Jesus was born, suffered, and died on the cross. According to Bultmann, the Gospels contain literary patterns without which an accurate interpretation of the Gospels cannot be given. He used Form Criticism to interpret these patterns. Form Criticism seeks to identify patterns that have played a role in the formation of the Gospels due to the influence of oral tradition. These patterns reflect the changes in early Christian life that were narrated according to the circumstances. Bultmann believed that by Form Criticism, he could understand the historical conditions that played a role in the formation of the Gospels and reveal the deeper meaning of the text. This article seeks to examine the Form Criticism and function in Bultmann's hermeneutics in a descriptive-analytical manner, emphasizing the importance of the role of story and parable in the interpretation of the Gospels. It emphasizes the point that the stories of the Gospels are not historical evidence, but rather the way through which Jesus expressed his teachings.
