This study examines the representation of magic in Jewish texts and seeks to identify its status, characteristics, and the attitudes associated with it. The research data consist of the Torah and the Talmuds, which have been systematically analyzed using thematic analysis.
The findings indicate that magic in these texts is neither an absolute nor an autonomous force; rather, it is limited and subject to divine supervision and will, and even pious individuals are capable of restraining it. The thematic analysis reveals five main axes: first, the attribution of nature to magic and the description of its characteristics and functions; second, the construction of opposition between magic and divine power or between magicians and the religious community; third, moral–legal evaluation; fourth, the construction of the identity of magicians; and fifth, the representation of everyday life.
The results also suggest that attitudes toward magic combine elements of fear, moral and social control, and theology, reflecting the norms and values of society. This study demonstrates that magic is a supernatural concept and has functioned as a tool for representing power, morality, and social laws within the cultural context of Judaism. The findings of this research provide a basis for comparison with other cultures and for comparative studies of the representation of supernatural concepts in other religious and cultural texts, contributing to a better understanding of the role of moral and theological teachings in shaping societal beliefs.
