Religious institutions, like political institutions, possess structure, organization, leadership, oversight, and boundary-keeping. Defending religious teachings requires a class of clergy who, by abandoning worldly interests, devote themselves to religious matters for themselves and their followers. In Judaism, almost all of the above responsibilities have been placed on Jewish rabbis (ḥakhamim).
The subject of the present article is to examine the reasons for the endurance of the rabbinic system and the mechanisms governing it over the past centuries up to the present time. The main question of the article is that, given that religious leaders and clergy are responsible for protecting the faith, how has this occurred in the case of the Jewish minority, and how has this internal religious cohesion been able to preserve the identity of the Jewish community? The hypothesis of the present article is that the rabbinic structure and mechanisms have preserved Jewish identity, and with the establishment of the Jewish state, they have been able to maintain the Jewish nature of the state. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis based on longitudinal historical studies. The findings of the research indicate that the rabbinic system has been able to fulfill its responsibility in controlling the Jewish religious community over the past centuries.
